Rehearsal Dinner Speeches

Clink, clink clink. The Mother-of-the-Bride is tapping her spoon to her glass. That can only mean one thing: It is time for the rehearsal dinner speech to begin.

Rehearsal dinner speeches are traditionally given by the Father-of-the-Groom or Father-of-the-Bride. The Best Man, Maid of Honor, Bride and Groom are all welcome to give rehearsal dinner toasts as well, however it is not customary.

• How to Write a Toast: If you plan to speak at a rehearsal dinner, write a speech that is structured with a beginning, middle and end. Include smooth transitions between each section. A catchy opening is sure to grab the attention of guests. For example, recite a few lyrics from the background song that was playing during the special couple’s proposal. Mention a funny (but appropriate) story about the bride and groom. Relay that you are proud and honored to be a part of this special occasion. End the speech with a quotation or words that will leave a lasting impression. For example, “They say that you don’t marry the person you can live with, you marry the person who you cannot live without. Cheers to a magical evening filled with wonderful family and friends, memories that will last forever and a lifetime of happiness.”

• Know Your Audience: In between meal courses is the most appropriate time to make wedding rehearsal dinner toasts. The best advice to keep in mind is to know your audience. If the best man is giving a rehearsal dinner toast, he must be cognizant that the future bride will be sensitive to certain topics. For example, do not offer details of the Bachelor party. In addition, the future groom will not want to hear stories of his future wife’s ex-boyfriends. With grandparents, parents, out-of-town guests and children present, keep the toasts PG!

• Bride and Groom Toast: The rehearsal dinner is a perfect opportunity for the bride and groom to make a toast to their family, friends and most importantly each other. Thank friends and family for their love and support throughout the years. For example, “Last weekend, during dinner, we reminisced about our lives together and how our family and friends have played such an important role. With that said, this speech is not only in celebration of our special day, but also to honor each and every one of you.”
