Make "Strange World"- Inspired Activities and Snacks

Bake Strange Creature Sugar Cookies

Early in their adventure in the Strange World, the Clades meet "Splat,” a strange creature who becomes their friend and guide. Let's use Splat as our inspiration and get the kids involved in creating our own mysterious creatures — from cookies!

Here's one of our favorite Sugar Cookie recipes:

Ingredients

  • 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  2. Stir flour, baking soda, and baking powder in a small bowl.
  3. Beat sugar and butter together in a large bowl with an electric mixer until smooth. Beat in egg and vanilla. Gradually blend in the flour mixture.
  4. Give each child a portion of dough. Get them to roll, cut, or form the dough into the shape of their mysterious character. Place each one 2 inches apart onto ungreased baking sheets.
  5. Bake the cookies in the preheated oven until the edges are golden, 8 to 10 minutes. Cool on the baking sheets briefly before removing them to a wire rack to cool completely.

When the cookies have cooled, use colored frosting, sprinkles, and more to decorate your characters exactly as you'd like!

Build Your Own Binoculars

Entertain guests and explore the unknown with a binoculars craft project, or create your own binoculars in advance to use as decorations for the party!

Supplies

  • Empty toilet paper rolls
  • Hot glue gun or glue
  • Yarn or ribbon
  • Hole punch
  • Decorating supplies (markers, crayons, stickers)
Instructions

  1. Attach your toilet paper rolls in the middle with white glue. For extra hold, add a few dots of hot glue.
  2. Have an adult poke a hole in either side of the binoculars to add a string.
  3. Cut a length of string or ribbon and attach it to the binoculars.
  4. Decorate and go on an adventure!

Tip: To make the binoculars even more ready for adventure, use glue to add magnifying glasses as lenses.

Dress Like Explorers

Pick up explorer hats and have guests bring a vest from home so they are ready for adventure. The more pockets, the better — you need somewhere to hold all your treasure finds!

Make “Splat” Slime
Create your own Splat, right at home! This craft can be messy, but it’s always a favorite.

Supplies

  • 8-ounce bottle white school glue
  • 1 1/2 – 2 Tablespoons contact saline solution
  • 1 Tablespoon baking soda
  • Food coloring
Instructions

  1. Add glue and food coloring to a bowl.
  2. Mix in baking soda
  3. Mix in saline solution. Add 1 1/2 Tablespoons saline solution and mix until combined. If it’s too sticky, add 1/2 Tablespoon more solution at a time. The more you add, the thicker it’ll be. The less you add, the slimier it’ll be!
  4. Using your hands, knead the slime until it holds together. It will be wet and gooey at first, but just keep kneading until it all comes together.

Go Exploring on a Strange World Scavenger Hunt

Create a Strange World Scavenger Hunt. The Clades are legendary explorers and their adventure is all about their family so this is a perfect opportunity to enjoy with family, or with a group of friends!

Bring your phones and take pictures of each of the items that you check off the list as you explore your yard. If you have a large group, break into teams and make it a contest to see who can find all of the items first! To make it easier to collect all of the photos in one place, create a Shared Album and have everyone on your team upload the images as you go!

Here are some sample scavenger clues in celebration of the film:

  • Something purple
  • A dog
  • A hat
  • Something cold
  • Glasses
  • A box
  • An old photo
  • Something that splats
  • A tree
