Yankee Doodle Candy
If you’re throwing a Fourth of July bash this year, consider a play on Yankee Doodle Dandy and make your celebration all about Yankee Doodle Candy! Candy is a great snack to bring to a firework show, parade, or just enjoy post-cookout. Patriotic candy isn’t just for kids either; it is nostalgic for adults too!
A great way to serve up some sweet treats during your all-American celebration is to create a July 4th candy buffet filled with classic chocolate bars and red, white, and blue sweets. Here are some tips to help you create the ultimate Yankee Doodle candy buffet.
- Table set-up: Create a festive table on which to display the 4th of July candy. Cover the table with a navy blue table cover. Attach an American flag to the front of the table as a table skirt to make it look more patriotic. Purchase a variety of red and white bowls and clear glass jars. You can also decorate the table with a patriotic flower bouquet, confetti stars, and other patriotic table accents. Create Yankee Doodle themed labels for the candy from card stock. This will help your guests better identify the different varieties of candy.
- Supplies: In addition to the obvious items such as bowls, jars, and candy, also purchase small bags for guests to make their own candy bags. The bags can be small clear or colored plastic bags, or small white or brown paper bags. This will take your guests back to the days of going to the candy store to pick out "penny" candy. Also, get some small metal scoops for the candies that aren't wrapped like jelly beans and M&Ms.
- Candy: Serve a variety of classic American candy bars, patriotic colored candy, and chocolates. Display the red, white, and blue candies in the clear glass jars for a festive fun look. Packaged candy is better displayed on platters or bowls, depending on the shape. Here are some candy suggestions to serve at your July 4th candy buffet:
- Red, White & Blue: In the clear bowls, places red, white and blue M&Ms, jelly beans, and Swedish fish. In the clear jars, place red licorice, white candy canes, and blue rock candy.
- American classics: Any child who grew up in the U.S. has nostagic feelings for certain candies. Items like Bazooka gum, candy buttons, tootsie rolls, pixy sticks, and candy necklaces are great to include in your candy buffet.
- Chocolate: What would a candy buffet be without chocolate? Include small, snack size versions of Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, Snickers, and Hershey Kisses.
- Red, White & Blue: In the clear bowls, places red, white and blue M&Ms, jelly beans, and Swedish fish. In the clear jars, place red licorice, white candy canes, and blue rock candy.
You don’t have to limit your buffet to just chocolates and candy, especially is you are short on space. Display additional patriotic sweets such as star-shaped sugar cookies, brownies, and cupcakes on the table, too.
